Programmable electronic refractometer for absolutely safe and reliable measurement results. Very simple 1-click application for fast and effective work.

There are many different types of refractometers. What functionalities should a refractometer have in the field of NDT (non-destructive testing), especially in fluorescent penetrant testing and systems for dye penetrant testing, so that you can work with it as effectively and easily as possible? Refractometer is not just a refractometer. Depending on the specified standards, NDT (non-destructive testing) places particularly high demands on the devices, the measurement and the entire process.

With many years of experience in NDT, fluorescent penetrant testing and also the development and construction of plants and systems for dye penetrant testing, SECU-CHEK offers products specially tailored to the user, which benefit NDT specialists in the rough everyday practice. This has also led to our digital handheld refractometer for NDT experts, which supports you from A to Z and enables you to work as simply and quickly as possible while at the same time providing consistently precise and reliable measurement results.

In addition to the most important features of the various refractometers for NDT, we have also put together an overview that is as comprehensive as possible of all the questions and answers that arise on the subject of refractometers, NDT, fluorescent penetrant testing (FPI), emulsifier concentration and other aspects.

Refractometers for NDT are available in different versions:

  • Hand refractometer or handheld refractometer, mobile refractometer, inline refractometer or process refractometer and much more
  • analog refractometers, digital refractometers
  • electronic refractometers with battery or with mains cable etc.

All refractometers have one thing in common, what they measure: Refractometers measure the refractive index of liquids (refractomy), for example to determine the concentration of dissolved substances in NDT (emulsifier concentration, etc.).

The refractive index of the refractometer is the basic measured value that, depending on the area of application, such as the analysis of the emulsifier concentration in NDT, still has to be converted and adjusted in a time-consuming process so that one can work in compliance with standards such as ASTM. This conversion process in the refractometer is a possible source of error that can be ruled out from the outset by using the right refractometer and at the same time the effort can be reduced to a minimum.

ATC Refractometer - Refractometer with ATC "Automatic Temperature Compensation"

ATC-Refraktometer mit Temperatur-Messung

Regardless of whether it is an analogue refractometer or a digital refractometer: the temperature has a decisive influence on the measurement result. Ideally, the ambient temperature, the sample and the calibration solution should be at a constant 20°C. To avoid measuring errors or inaccuracies, a temperature correction must be made at temperatures deviating from 20°C.

What does the ATC refractometer do exactly? At a higher temperature, the volume of a liquid increases, but the weight does not change. This has an effect on the refractive index and must be taken into account when calculating the refractometer.

ATC refractometers for NDT are available in different versions, whereby we generally recommend the electronic, less error-prone refractometer:

  • ATC analog refractometer with “manual” temperature correction: the zero value must be readjusted using the calibration solution.
  • ATC digital refractometer with automatic temperature compensation. Here the digital refractometer does everything in one step

The SECU-CHEK hand-held refractometer for NDT (800-RM-DP-DR301) is an ATC refractometer and, in contrast to analogue refractometers, does all the work for you and thus also prevents possible user errors and measurement inaccuracies, since the temperature compensation takes place automatically and the measurement results are available within approx. 1 second.

Our automatic refractometer (auto-refractometer) includes all relevant functionalities and reduces your process enormously: refractive index refractometer calculator, refractometer correction calculator, refractometer digital with temperature compensation (ATC) as well as including ATC refractometer operating instructions request now!

Refractometer types: there are many different types of refractometers geared to the respective area of application. A basic distinction can be made between analog refractometers and digital refractometers.

Traditional hand refractometers easily fit in a trouser pocket, the measurement is analog, i.e. using an optical prism and reading the scale (refractive index). Digital hand-held refractometers use an optical sensor to measure the refractive index, which records the reflection of the light from an LED light source. Both types of refractometers can work with different scales such as the refractive index (refractive index, Brix scale, salinity (salt content), etc.), whereby the digital refractometer takes a few measuring steps and conversion steps and is therefore less prone to errors.

Which types of refractometers are used in Germany, but also worldwide?

Digital and analogue refractometers for laboratories, process refractometers or inline refractometers, test refractometers, Brix refractometers, portable refractometers, differential refractometers, multi-parameter refractometers, refractometers analog with refractometer correction table

Examples of types of refractometers are: handheld refractometers, Abbe refractometers, Pulfrich refractometers, Wollastons refractometers, Jelley refractometers

Refractometer price: if you make a refractometer comparison and compare the different models, you can basically say the following: simple analog models are often available for less than 100 EUR, while digital refractometers and laboratory refractometers, depending on the version, can quickly be found in three and land in the four-digit range.

Refractometer FAQ - Frequently asked questions and answers about refractometers

What is a refractometer? What is measured with a refractometer?

Refractometer Definition: The refractometer is a measuring device for determining the refractive index of – liquid or solid – transparent materials by refractometry. This is the best explanation, detailed information can be found here (Refractometer Wiki)

What can you measure with a refractometer? The refractive index, also called optical density or refractive index (source including physical details here)

What are the areas of use and areas of application for refractometers?

Refractometer Applications: Measuring the emulsifier concentration in penetrant testing (PT penetrant testing), a subcategory of NDT (non-destructive testing). Measure sugar content in grapes, fruit, etc. Measure alcohol content in a sugar or alcohol solution. Identification of unknown substances. measure salinity. Clinical Applications. Automotive applications such as measuring the freezing point of coolants. Determination of precious stones. Pharmacy, chemical industry, aviation, metal processing and building technology, food industry, and much more.

How does a refractometer work? Refractometer measuring principle / refractometer structure / refractometer function

Refractometer principle: Due to the different optical densities (refractive index) of different liquids, a light beam propagates at a different angle when it hits the liquid. This angle represents the refractive index, which can then be used to infer certain properties (e.g. different concentrations).

Structure of a refractometer: in its simplest form, a refractometer has a light source, a prism onto which the sample is placed and then an optical sensor (digital refractometer) or the human eye (analogue refractometer) with which the angle of refraction is then determined.

Refractometer function: The way a refractometer works is that a beam of light from a light source hits a sample (e.g. emulsifier solution in dye penetrant testing) through a prism and is partially refracted or partially reflected. The angle required to calculate the refractive index is found at the boundary between the light and dark areas.

Calibrate refractometer / Set and adjust refractometer / Calibrate ATC refractometer

A refractometer should be calibrated regularly. To do this, the refractometer calibration liquid (often distilled water) should be applied to the optical prism at a temperature of 20° Celsius. Attention: Depending on the calibration liquid used for the refractometer, there are different reference values.
Now it is checked whether the limit line at the refractometer is on the correct value. If so: the refractometer is set correctly, i.e. correctly calibrated. If not, you must readjust the scale and set it to the correct value. Ready. (More information about calibrating the refractometer and different reference values can be found here)

Calibrate ATC refractometer: with digital refractometers, the calibration is done by the device itself.

Refractometer correction table / Refractometer ATC temperature correction / Refractometer conversion table

The official conversion table or correction table for refractometers for temperature adjustment can be found here (p.9/p.10):

https://www.oiml.org/en/files/pdf_r/r108-e93.pdf

Note: good digital ATC refractometers do the automatic temperature compensation automatically, so you don’t have to do the conversion yourself. Let us advise you.

Which norms and standards are important for refractometers, especially for NDT refractometers?

Aviation industry: NADCAP 7114-11, AMS 2644 and QPL-AMS-S 2644, NIST (National Bureau of Standards, USA) and many more.

Example: NDE during Manufacture and Maintenance of Aircrafts and Helicopters

Cleaning of refractometers, maintenance of refractometers, especially laboratory refractometers

Hand refractometer: clean the optical prism with a soft cloth, do not scratch the surface of the prism. Before the measurement, the prism or the sample trough should be completely cleaned. After the measurement, clean the prism with a damp, soft cloth.
